- Whenever you take a stroll in the gardens, you can hear the mountains sing in the distance. You can’t understand their words, but their melodies always remind you of home.
- The first day in the castle, people warn you not to ask about Madame Maxime. Those who ask, she calls to her room at night. People can hear cracking bones and screams come out of the room. Those who leave the room are never the same again.
- You’re sat down at the dinner table. You stare at the crystalline statue of a forgotten prince. Just like all the others, his stare is colder than the ice that it’s made out of. You feel lonelier than ever.
- The Abraxans are restless at night. Maybe it’s the whiskey that makes them flap their wings furiously. Maybe it’s something else looming in the dark they’re trying to warn you about.
- The fountain in the courtyard likes visitors. It hears stories from those sitting on its marble cornerstones, and whispers them back to unsuspecting passersby. You’ve heard the water laugh, cry, gasp before. You’ve never heard it scream.
- Every girl in the school has crystal clear skin and glassy shining eyes. Every boy has a jawline of steel and royal prominent noses. Every time you look in the mirrors, you see yourself become more deformed, more beastly, more…green. The healing waters don’t help.
- You’re sat down at the dinner table. Christmas ball comes and goes in a blur. After a magical night of dancing with a handsome, regal boy, you wake up in your bed, drenched and shivering. Snowflakes cover your hair, and ice creeps up in your veins. Had you seen this boy before?
- The silky blue robes of students become more and more translucent by the day. All those people with porcelain skin, you realize, have scars all over their bodies that you never saw. The scars always bleed, but the robes remain ever spotless and satin smooth.
- One day, you find the abandoned carriages in a secret cove in the back gardens. The metal gates are rusty, the bright blue and gold paint peeled away, the wheels broken into splinters. You climb into one and curl up into one of the seats. Ghosts surround you with ghastly moans of longing.
- You’re sat down at the dinner table. You stare at the crystalline statue of a forgotten prince. In a moment of loneliness, you can swear he grinned at you with lustful eyes. You realize he was never supposed to be there. The statues only appear at Christmas time. When you look at him once more, he disappears with a chuckle.
- You talk to the fountains when your head is full of thoughts. Today, the waters are pleased with your stories. You finish your story to freeze in place with a familiar chuckle. You still haven’t heard the waters scream.
